Metal parts being machined on a shop floor

Industries

Metalworking

Measure the part, track the tool, keep the machine running.

A machine shop usually finds out too late. Drift is noticed when parts fail final inspection, and by then the material, the machine time and the labor are already spent. In-process and SPC (statistical process control) charts a measurement as the inspector enters it, with limits taken from the process itself rather than copied off the drawing. A rule break raises a finding while the parts are still good. Every reading names the gauge. Punches and dies die by count, so Tools & Fixtures takes the count from Production, and one damaged position can be blocked instead of pulling the whole tool. Maintenance computes MTBF (mean time between failures) and MTTR (mean time to repair) from closed jobs.

We have built automation and embedded systems for metal plants since 2015, so the machines and the metrology are familiar ground. Be clear on what this is: the modules fit a machine shop well, and our platform deployments are concentrated in the regulated industries above. A metalworking plant would be an early platform customer, working close to the team that builds it.

What hurts today

  • Drift is noticed when parts fail final inspection.
  • Chart limits are copied off the drawing, not taken from the process.
  • Tool life is a wall chart, or the setter's head.
  • Time between failures is compiled by hand, if at all.

The rules you work under

Most machine shops hold ISO 9001, and shops supplying automotive or aerospace add IATF 16949 or AS9100 on top of it. Phasis holds the process charts, the gauge calibration status and the maintenance history those audits ask to see.
