Sawn timber stacked beside a woodworking machine

Wood

Uptime on the line, and the tools that cut.

A wood plant lives on uptime and on tooling. Blades and cutter heads wear out by the meter cut, not by the calendar, and a line stopped for a blade change reads the same in the monthly report as a line stopped for a breakdown. Production records output, scrap and every stop as it happens, and turns them into OEE (overall equipment effectiveness). Tools & Fixtures takes tool life from those same records, so remaining life is a live number and a tool past its service count flags itself. Maintenance creates the planned jobs on its own. Shifts & Labor publishes one week the whole plant reads.

We have built automation, embedded systems and Industrial IoT for plants like this since 2015, so the machines and the people are familiar ground. Be clear on what this is: the modules fit a wood plant well, and our platform deployments are concentrated in the regulated industries above. A wood plant would be an early platform customer, working close to the team that builds it.

What hurts today

  • Tool life is a wall chart, or the setter's head.
  • Service is scheduled by date, so a worn tool fails mid-run.
  • The maintenance calendar is a spreadsheet in the planner's head.
  • The shift week is a wall chart, reissued by email.

The rules you work under

Wood plants work under machinery and workplace safety rules, and many hold ISO 9001 and ISO 45001; panel producers also carry formaldehyde emission limits and timber due-diligence obligations on what they buy. Phasis records the production, maintenance, tooling and shift data behind those checks. It does not hold the timber due-diligence file.
